Experience
I hold an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Clemson University and a PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Florida. My graduate work focused in a specialized area of Microbiology, combining plant science with parasitic microbes. I have worked for more than five years with interns and non-traditional students in both classroom and laboratory settings. I greatly enjoy teaching subjects related to life sciences, such as Plant Sciences, Genetics, Biology, and Microbiology. I've been fascinated with these subjects since childhood, and my educational approach has been influenced by the land grant extension service, which teaches people to be self sufficient. For each individual or group, I create hands-on approaches to the topics. I'm also a strong believer in the importance of a communicative approach, and frame questions to challenge my students to think and engage. A fun and engaging approach helps build a passion for learning and encourages inquisitiveness. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, gardening, and yoga. I consider fall the best time of the year, and I take nostalgic pleasure in the excitement surrounding college football season. I also enjoy fairs, harvest festivals, and art shows. It seems that something about the autumn inspires creativity. I also like cooking, particularly my personal variation on soul food.
