Experience

Homeschooling Instructor, Albuquerque, NM & Boston, MA April 1989-present Created multiple curricula to educate children in history, language arts, science, math and music. Freelance Tutor, Albuquerque, NM & Boston, MA April 1989-present Tailored a variety of curricula to address students’ specific special needs and learning styles. I have developed a learning games curriculum for K-3, which includes both gross and fine motor activities, and have used this curriculum successfully with many children, individually and in small groups. I even used this same curriculum to tutor students in grades 9-12 in the Boston Public School System which proves both the versatility of the curriculum as well as the need to play games to enrich students so they don’t end up desperately needing it later (although games are fun and useful at all ages). My passion is getting children to understand the concepts, not just "fill in the blanks". I love enabling children to recognize the inherent algorithms in even the most basic math, science, reading and writing. I am skilled at recognizing learning styles and improvising strategies to help your child learn. These strategies include games, songs, gross-motor activities as well as the typical fine-motor worksheets. Also, I use an integrated approach to teaching and challenge myself to tie as many of your child's subjects as possible together in a coherent bundle to enhance retention.

Hobbies

I play the violin and I sing. I'm currently in the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus. I love to sing and will frequently have children sing songs to remember rules of what they are learning. If the child is able, I will have him/her compose a song or rap or dance to combination to promote memory. I firmly believe that children learn best through interactive play. My 20 year old son describes his home education as mostly "just playing games". He is currently at the Juilliard School studying cello performance. My eldest has his Master's Degree in computer science and is working at Northrup Grumman in Maryland, and my daughter uses her Master's Degree working as a technical writer in Boston. My fourth child, 17yo son, has Asperger's Syndrome, and is with me in Albuquerque taking dual credit classes at CNM. I homeschooled all of my children until college.
