My name is Erica, and I believe deeply in the power of education to create social change. I am a graduate of Oberlin College, where I double-majored in English and Classics/Ancient Latin. As an undergraduate, I worked with nearly every education outreach program in the city of Oberlin, Ohio, serving as a 3rd-5th grade summer teacher, an early childhood literacy tutor, and a mentor for students in grades 5-12. I also have experience as a private tutor in Ancient Latin and late-middle through high school math. In addition to nearly five years of working with students in all age groups and across all grade levels, I have extensive experience in tutor development. As the Tutoring Coordinator at the largest "safety net" organization in southern Lorain County, Ohio, I trained and coordinated the placement of college-aged math tutors in local public schools and after-school programs. I was also charged with the task of developing all k-12 educational programming throughout the year, including the development of a large and interdisciplinary after-school program for low-income students. I am very familiar with best tutoring and pedagogical practices, having developed and presented training on these topics to my own tutors! My approach to tutoring is highly student-centered, and will likely never involve lecturing or the "depositing" of knowledge into students' "brain banks"; I encourage all students to construct their own knowledge where they are able through exploration of their own interests and strengths. I prepare all my students to succeed in school and on standardized tests by encouraging them to relate their learning to their own lives and to think critically about their work.
